About the museum
The museum was prompted by police officer Konrad Schäfer, who came to Wanna in 1936 and studied the prehistory of the village as a local researcher. He also collected older household items. On his initiative, a local history room was set up in Osterwanna in 1957; it soon became too small and was first housed in a classroom of the former Westerwanna school.
In 1967, active members of the Verkehrsverein (local tourism association), founded in 1962, set up the local history museum in the former school barn. When this also became too cramped, a second building was added in 1984: an old half-timbered house that was dismantled in Köhlen and rebuilt in Wanna.
Today the museum shows a complete forge from the 1940s, a shoemaker's workshop and other craft rooms, and illustrates life in the early 20th century. Early historical finds are also displayed; the school barn holds bog finds and specimens of local wildlife. Once a year there is an open day with guided tours and demonstrations.
