About the museum
The gatehouse was built in 1641 as part of the castle complex in Otterndorf and, together with the only partially preserved castle moat, protected the castle, which today houses the local court. The round gate arches through which carriages once drove onto the castle grounds can still be seen in the masonry.
Since 1972 the Labiau/East Prussia heritage collection has been housed here. It goes back to the sponsorship that the former Land Hadeln district, and later the Cuxhaven district, took over for the East Prussian district of Labiau on the Curonian Lagoon (Kurisches Haff). The collection is run together with the Kreisgemeinschaft Labiau (district community association), which looks after the house with volunteers.
On display are everyday objects that families took with them when they fled, models of the typical Curonian boats with their wooden mast pennants, pictures, writings and costumes, as well as documentation of the period after 1945, when Labiau came under Russian administration and became Polessk. The upper floor hosts changing exhibitions. The gatehouse is also a stop on the historic town walk with an audio experience.
