About the museum

The craft museum in Bad Bederkesa aims to show the development of crafts in the Elbe-Weser region from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. The first ideas emerged in the 1980s; the museum was set up from 1995. What individual guilds already owned came together: the shoemakers had a small museum of their own, the hairdressers a complete ladies' and gentlemen's salon, and a letterpress printing shop was also at hand.

The Flecken (municipality) of Bederkesa made the former gasworks building available. After extensive renovation, 14 guilds of the Kreishandwerkerschaft Bremerhaven-Wesermünde (district chamber of crafts) are represented with their trades. The founder Peter Hennig died in 2013; the original founding association dissolved in 2014. Since February 19, 2014, the association Museum des Handwerks Bad Bederkesa e.V. has run the house.

On display are tools and exhibits from hatmakers, blacksmiths, bakers, watchmakers and saddlers, among others. Three workshops are fully furnished, and there is also a collection of irons from around the world.
