About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Wiesenbach opened in 1981. Committed citizens around Ursula Schemmel built it up and supported it; she led the museum until 1994, after which Gisa Weber took over. Since 2017 Claus Hartmann has headed the Freundeskreis Heimatmuseum (friends' circle), which supports the work on a voluntary basis.
The museum is housed in the attic of today's town hall on Hauptstraße. The building went up in 1901/1902 and served as a school and town hall until 1967. Six rooms display mainly prehistoric and early historic finds, most of them Roman, including a cast of the lower jaw of a roughly 500,000-year-old Homo heidelbergensis, a stone axe, and Roman building elements from two estate farms in the municipal area.
Further rooms show rural and village life between 1850 and 1930: a period-accurate kitchen, a sleeping chamber, a needlework room with linen and embroidery, equipment from farming and crafts, a shoemaker's workshop and a 1930s classroom. Historic photos are laid out at the entrance for browsing.
A branch of the friends' circle is the Alte Ziegelei (old brickworks) on Poststraße, opened as a museum in 2000. It is a historic brick kiln with a rare Altdeutscher Kammerofen (old German chamber kiln), where changing art exhibitions also take place.
