About the museum
The Ziesar local history museum is located on the former estate yard of the castle complex. It reopened on June 4, 2005, during the castle festival, after the town had created a larger exhibition space. The Kultur- und Heimatverein (culture and local history association) set up the roughly 200 square meters with many loans from local residents.
The permanent exhibition traces the development of the town. A built-in “house” in the room shows how people lived about a hundred years ago. A display case recalls the founding charter of the Diocese of Brandenburg from 948, in which Ziesar appears as “civitas ezeri,” which can be interpreted as “behind the lake.” Ziesar was a bishop's seat until 1560.
Other topics include club life, among them the shooting guild (1578 to 1945) and the fire brigade (since 1880), the development of schools in the region, and pottery, which shaped the town from 1647 for three centuries, including a potter's workstation. Crafts such as shoemaking, saddlery, basket weaving, wheelwrighting and blacksmithing are also represented. There are also landscape paintings by the Ziesar-born painter Otto Altenkirch (1875), rural household items, and a linen room with historical clothing.
