Kreismuseum Jerichower Land
District museum in an Art Nouveau villa in Genthin on the history between the Elbe, Havel and Fläming from the Ice Age to the 20th century.
About the museum
The museum goes back to the Verein für Altertumsfreunde (society of antiquity enthusiasts), founded in Genthin in 1886, which assembled an extensive collection. In 1908 the then Jerichow II district took over these holdings.
Since 1928 the museum has been housed in an Art Nouveau villa on Mützelstraße, not far from Genthin station. After the merger of the Burg and Genthin districts in 1994, it became the Kreismuseum of the new Jerichower Land district.
The collection comprises more than 25,000 objects from the region. In 13 rooms, the permanent exhibition spans the arc from the Ice Age formation of the landscape through early settlement to the 20th century: topics include the lives of farmers and townspeople, crafts and clubs, the building of the Plauer Canal and land reclamation under Frederick II, weaving and brickworks, narrow-gauge railways and the Henkelwerk, as well as the end of the war and the postwar period. With the "Mobiles Museum" project, the museum also visits schools and daycare centers. The program is complemented by changing exhibitions, holiday activities and events such as the Advent afternoons at the museum.
