About the museum
The Heimatstube is located in Möckern Castle and is devoted entirely to the Battle of Möckern on April 5, 1813. At that time Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepson and Viceroy of Italy, had assembled an army in the Magdeburg area, partly made up of remnants of the Grande Armée; near Möckern it was defeated by the troops of Bülow and Yorck.
The exhibition extends over several floors of the castle. On display are a replica of a cannon, a diorama showing a skirmish at Vehlitz, and numerous finds from the battlefield. The Traditionsverein (tradition association) 1813 supports the presentation.
The castle itself was built as a half-timbered building from 1705 to 1713 for Christian Wilhelm von Münchhausen, and was converted in the Neo-Gothic style from 1840 to 1863 under Count Adelbert vom Hagen. Since 1998 it has housed a primary school; after renovation by the town, it also hosts concerts and exhibitions.
