Steinzeitdorf Randau

Opening hoursAdmission €2.50 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The starting point is a roughly 4,500-year-old post-hole house of the Schönfeld culture, whose remains were secured in 1941 in a sand dune on the old bank of the Elbe. To make this house experienced again, a friends' association was founded in 2001. With municipal job creation measures and many volunteers, the site on the northern edge of Randau was created and could open in 2003.

Over the following years, the roughly two-hectare site was equipped with a longhouse of the Linear Pottery culture based on finds from the Magdeburg Börde, an early medieval pit house, a clay bread oven, and a palisade wall. There is also a herb garden with Stone Age useful plants and an adventure trail below the village. The houses represent three periods, from the beginning of farming settlement more than 7,000 years ago to the end of the Stone Age and into the Middle Ages.

Today, the friends' association runs the museum with volunteers. Visitors may touch and try out much, from making fire to spinning with hand spindles and archery; on special occasions, bread is baked in the clay oven. Over the course of the year, a season opening and an Advent market take place.
