About the museum
Burg lay on the Ihle and was well situated for the tanning trade: in 1840 five oak-bark tanners and nine white tanners were already working there, and towards the end of the 19th century there were 19 tanneries. The building at Hainstraße 12 housed the Albrecht tannery, the town's last operating tannery, until 1991. Theodor Albrecht had founded it in 1864 as an oak-bark tannery, and in 1967 Lutz Albrecht switched to chrome tanning. Partly because of wastewater regulations, production ended in 1991.
The property was renovated with public funds and declared a technical monument of the town in 1993. Today it is the seat of the Heimatverein Burg und Umgebung e. V. On guided tours, machines, tools and finished products illustrate the lengthy tanning process.
The ensemble includes the former tanner's residence from the 15th/16th century, one of the oldest surviving half-timbered buildings in the town. In the complex the association also shows a soap manufactory with its original office, an overview of the Burg shoe industry including a shoe cabinet, and changing exhibitions on the town's history.
