About the museum

The Heimatstube (local heritage room) in Obertiefenbach is the work of the Catholic men's association Männerwerk St. Ägidius. Over many years its members collected objects from the village and spent about four years converting the attic of the parish hall into a museum through their own labor. The Heimatstube opened in March 1998 and has been looked after by a volunteer team ever since.

The listed building opened in 1873 as the village's elementary school and stands right next to the neo-Gothic parish church of St. Ägidius. Today it serves as the parish hall “Alte Schule” (Old School); the exhibition occupies about 190 square meters under the roof.

On display are a complete shoemaker's workshop, an old living room, tools from various building trades, and implements from farming and the household. Other sections are devoted to religious life, the fire brigade, school history, the former basalt quarrying, and the ruins of Beselich monastery. A dedicated section commemorates the many expellees who found a new home in the village after 1945, and a display case honors federal minister Georg Leber, who came from Obertiefenbach. The holdings also include an extensive village archive with photos and documents.
