About the museum
The Burgschmiede at the lower gate of Ellar's town wall was first mentioned in records in 1462 and operated as a forge until shortly after 1800. The small half-timbered house, because of its sturdy timbers, probably dates back to before the Thirty Years' War. The culture and history association Ellar, which emerged in 1987 from a working group, secured its protection as a listed building and renovated it with support from the municipality, in about 6,000 volunteer hours; in 1988 it opened as a museum.
On display are a fully working forge, a craftsman's corner with the tools of cabinetmakers, carpenters, wheelwrights, woodcutters and shoemakers, and a farming section with agricultural equipment. Special features include the tools of Ellar master cabinetmaker Abel (1861–1940), who worked without machines. Unlike in many museums, visitors may handle and try things out here, for example the blacksmith's hammer and bellows.
Since 1993 the offering has been complemented by the local history museum (Heimatmuseum) in the Old School, which covers cultural history from the Paleolithic to the present. Rare exhibits include a meteorite, a fossil dinosaur egg and a collection of leaflets dropped over Ellar between 1942 and 1945.
