About the museum
The beginnings of the Heimatverein Calbe (Saale) go back to 1972, when a working group "Heimatgeschichte" (local history) was founded within the Kulturbund of the GDR. In 1980/81 its members, together with other helpers, built up the Heimatstube, which opened in April 1981; by the end of 2022 more than 74,000 guests had visited. In 1996 the property at Markt 13, which also holds the "Brauner Hirsch" inn, passed into the ownership of the town. Since 1998 the association has run the museum under a usage agreement with the town and has its office here. In 2002/03 the inn and the Heimatstube were converted and extended, and in 2009 a clay oven with a pergola was added outdoors.
The half-timbered house dates from the 17th century. The large entrance room was formerly a storeroom of an inn, and the timber frame comes from trees felled about 350 years ago in the Hohendorfer Busch near Calbe.
Of about 200 square meters of exhibition space, the 60-square-meter "Große Galerie" (Great Gallery) opens the tour: exhibitions change here, and lectures and events also take place, including programs for daycare and school groups as well as family and class reunions. From there, the permanent exhibition on town and regional history leads from prehistory through the Middle Ages and the early modern period to industrialization, the 20th century and the present. Dedicated rooms cover crafts, fishing and agriculture, as well as Calbe's time as a metallurgy center from 1951 to 1970.
