About the museum
The idea for the Heimatstube came from Freest school principal Erich Mundstock, who collected objects from everyday life in earlier times. In 1962 he set up a local history room in the Freest school; it was closed when he died in 1987.
After German reunification the former customs house, long used by the National People's Army (NVA), passed to the municipality of Kröslin. The Freest Heimatstube reopened there in 1992. Today the house has seven rooms for the permanent exhibition, plus rooms for temporary exhibitions and lectures. It has long since grown too large for a "Stube" (parlor), but the people of Freest still use the old name.
Visitors walk through an old living room, a kitchen, a bedroom and a schoolroom. There are also dolls, doll's carriages, a sewing corner and a hair salon, all donated by people in the region. The best-known pieces are the Freest fisherman's rugs, which are part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. The house also contains the Freest tourist information office.
