About the museum
The steam ferry "Stralsund" was built by the Schichau shipyard in Elbing and commissioned on October 20, 1890 by the Royal Prussian Railway Machinery Office in Stralsund. It was to carry railway wagons across the Strelasund between Stralsund and Altefähr on Rügen, after the railway had earlier connected the island by transfer ferries.
The ship is a so-called single-ended ferry: the wagons are shunted on board over the bow and unloaded there again at the end of the crossing, so the ferry had to turn around once on every trip. Its twin-screw drive with two expansion steam engines provides the power. The ship is about 36 meters long, almost 10 meters wide and suitable as an icebreaker.
For a hundred years, from 1890 to 1990, the ferry was used for various transport tasks. In 1992, the city of Wolgast took over the ship with the aim of turning it into a museum. Since the Förderverein Dampfeisenbahnfährschiff STRALSUND e.V. (friends' association) was founded in 2014, it has volunteered to maintain and service the ship and run the museum on board, explaining steam technology especially to young visitors. The ship lies in the Wolgast museum harbor.
