Historisch-Technisches Museum Peenemünde
Museum in the power plant of the former Heeresversuchsanstalt Peenemünde (Army Research Center) on rocket armament, the V2, Nazi forced labor, and the consequences reaching into the Cold War.
About the museum
The museum opened on May 9, 1991, on the site of the former Heeresversuchsanstalt Peenemünde (Army Research Center) in the north of Usedom. Here, from the 1930s onward, the army and the Luftwaffe developed unmanned weapon systems, including the A4 rocket (V2) and the Fi 103 cruise missile (V1); large numbers of forced laborers and concentration camp prisoners were involved in their construction and production.
The exhibition venue is the research centers' power plant, the last fully preserved original building of the complex. The permanent exhibition "Die Enden der Parabel" (The Ends of the Parabola) traces rocket technology from its utopian beginnings in the 1920s through Peenemünde and mass production to its use in the Cold War, placing this history in the context of Nazi armament policy and crimes. The boiler house tells the history of the power plant, and replicas of the V1 and V2 stand on the outdoor grounds.
Initially run as a municipal enterprise, the museum has been operated since 2010 by the Historisch-Technisches Museum Peenemünde GmbH. Since 2015 a glass elevator has taken visitors up to a viewing platform about 30 meters high. In addition, the "Denkmal-Landschaft Peenemünde" (Peenemünde Monument Landscape) offers a circular trail to historical sites in the surrounding area. The museum received the Cross of Nails from Coventry in 2002 and a Europa Nostra Award in 2013; more than 6.5 million visitors have come since its opening.
