About the museum

The building in the courtyard in Ebingen was erected in the second half of the 15th century as a seigneurial granary, that is, a grain store of the Württemberg authorities. Later it served as a warehouse for the Ebingen herb trading house Groz, hence the current name Kräuterkasten (herb storehouse).

Ebingen has had a local history museum since 1925. The Kräuterkasten has housed the collection on prehistory and early history since 1986, and a geological department was added a year later. The exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Landesdenkmalamt Baden-Württemberg (state monument office) and the Landesstelle für Museumsberatung (state museum advisory office).

Key holdings include finds from Bronze and Iron Age burial mounds and rich grave goods from the Alemannic and Merovingian periods. The natural history section shows fossils of the Swabian Alb, including ammonites, sponges and specimens from the Nusplinger Plattenkalk (Nusplingen platy limestone), as well as recreated habitats of native animals.

The museum is also an information point for the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb. The building also houses the cabaret stage “Bürgertreff”, with readings, lectures, music and theater, as well as the “Wirtschäftle” restaurant.
