About the museum
The Musikhistorische Sammlung Jehle is housed in the Stauffenberg Castle in the Albstadt district of Lautlingen, where it has been on view across several floors since 1977. In the same building, a memorial commemorates Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and his family; both exhibitions are visited together.
The collection shows string, wind, pipe, and keyboard instruments from various periods and cultures. Especially noteworthy are a harpsichord from the late 17th century, a hammerklavier by Johann Andreas Stein from 1773, and a representative 18th-century cabinet piano. The pianos allow the development of piano making to be traced without gaps.
The collection also includes an extensive museum library with music manuscripts as well as first and early printed editions from the 16th century onward. In the attic, the fully equipped workshop of a violin maker can be seen. A catalogue of the collection is available online for download; the building is cared for by the town of Albstadt.
