About the museum

The origins of the museum lie in the early postwar period: from 1951 onward, art exhibitions were regularly held in the Ebingen Heimatmuseum (local history museum) in the town hall. Mayor Walther Groz began building a private collection of modern prints from Expressionism onward around 1954, which later formed the core of the house. In 1970 a permanent display on the plein-air painter Christian Landenberger was set up in the town hall.

In 1974 the city acquired the former Evangelical Association House at Kirchengraben 11. In 1975, the year the city of Albstadt was founded, the Kunstmuseum opened there as an exhibition house and specialist collection for modern and contemporary art on paper. From 1976 the Stiftung Sammlung Walther Groz formed the cornerstone of the city's art holdings; it also established the Otto Dix collection.

Today the graphic collection comprises around 25,000 works, plus over 500 paintings and some sculptures. The museum holds 446 works by Otto Dix, making it one of the most important keepers of his work on paper worldwide. Other focal points are Felix Hollenberg, Dresden art, animal depictions, the collection on the landscape of the Swabian Alb, naive art and the New Relief. Since 1978 the Friends of the Kunstmuseum have made numerous acquisitions possible; since 2022 Kai Hohenfeld has directed the house.
