About the museum

Heuneburg sits on approximately three hectare large rock spur above Danube near Herbertingen-Hundersingen. First settlement traces go back to the Neolithic; in the Middle Bronze Age the plateau was first fortified and abandoned again around 1100 BC.

The complex experienced its heyday in the late Hallstatt period. Around 600 BC a mud brick wall was built following Mediterranean example, plus a forecourt with monumental stone gate and extensive external settlement. With an estimated approximately 5,000 inhabitants, Heuneburg is considered an early city north of the Alps, whose trade connections reached the Mediterranean; it is suspected to be the 'Pyrene' mentioned by Herodotus. Fires around 530 BC and mid-5th century BC ended the flourishing.

Excavations on the plateau began in 1921, the surroundings with burial mounds have been studied since the 19th century; today the State Office for Monument Preservation supervises research. Between 1998 and 2001 an open-air museum was established on the plateau with reconstructions of residential and workshop buildings.

The facility belongs to the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg. Finds from the surrounding area are shown in the Celtic Museum in Hundersingen, connected to Heuneburg via an archaeological trail.
