Finds museum in the former tithe barn of Hundersingen with original finds and displays on the Celtic Heuneburg; the excavation site itself is 2 km away.
In the Keltenmuseum, as part of the series “Bei uns zu Gast” (Guests with Us): a 1:2 scale model of the chamber of a Celtic princely grave, showing its construction, the arrangement of grave goods, and the status and burial customs of the late Hallstatt period.
About the museum
After around 30 years of excavation at the Heuneburg, the early Celtic settlement above the Danube, the results had been processed to the point where they could be shown to the public. The tithe barn of the Heiligkreuztal monastery in Hundersingen, built in 1783, was an obvious choice as museum building. The sponsoring body is the municipality of Herbertingen.
The historic building fabric of outer walls and roof structure contrasts with the plain fittings inside. The route on the first floor begins with more than a century of research history and the methods of excavation. This is followed by the main settlement phases and fortifications of the Heuneburg, from the Neolithic to historic times, with an emphasis on the Early Iron Age.
On the gallery on the second floor, the crafts and domestic work of the Celts are presented, such as the highly developed carpentry that made large buildings possible, and pottery. The attic offers space for changing special exhibitions.
Between 650 and 450 BC the Heuneburg, which ancient texts link with the city of Pyrene, was the most important center of settlement, trade and power north of the Alps. Imported goods such as amber, coral and Attic pottery bear witness to far-reaching connections. The open-air museum on the Burgberg itself is run by the Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg (State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg) and has its own entry.
