About the museum
Since 1994 the Museum Dittelsdorf has shown exhibitions on regional history, monument preservation and art in one of the village's valuable Umgebindehäuser. For years there were only changing exhibitions, including ten years of the “Galerie im Umgebindehaus” with contemporary art from Upper Lusatia. Since 2014 a permanent exhibition titled “Von der Wiege bis zur Bahre” has complemented the offer and told of village life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The house itself, with its building details, is also an exhibit. The collection includes historical household goods and old Upper Lusatian windows, among other things.
The museum is run by the volunteer association “Museum Dittelsdorf e.V.”, which took over the house from the municipality rent-free. A cloudburst followed by a flash flood once again damaged more than 30 houses in the village, including the museum.
The village tours “Dittelsdorf – ein Umgebinde-Guckkasten” are particularly well known. On a walk of roughly one and a half hours, they explain how the Umgebinde construction method came about and developed. After around 30 years of association and museum work, the museum is currently being redesigned and is therefore closed; the village tours remain on offer. A virtual tour of the former rooms is available online.
