About the museum
The museum began in summer 1968, when six pupils, under the guidance of a teacher, founded the "Junge Historiker" (Young Historians) circle to research village history. In 1971 young people and adults set up a first permanent exhibition in two rooms of the Efeuhaus; in 1972 it became the village museum, which has grown steadily ever since.
Today the ensemble consists of the Kremkehaus and the Efeuhaus, a courtyard, a carriage house, a studio, a forge, a small open-air stage, and the museum café. The Kremkehaus was built around 1700 and housed several craftsmen's families over the generations; today it displays, among other things, a shoemaker, a linen seamstress, a clockmaker, a barber, and a historic kitchen. The Efeuhaus focuses on weaving, which had special significance in Gingst.
In the carriage house, agricultural machines and the wheelwright's trade are on display, and the museum forge offers live forging demonstrations. In the season, markets, concerts, and courses take place in the museum courtyard.
