Unlike many district towns, Bergen’s museum came late: only after the Wende (the political change), in 1992, did the wish of many citizens for a house showing the town’s history in the context of the island’s history come true. The first exhibition filled three rooms of a former apartment in one of the convent buildings in the monastery courtyard. There was no collection at first; holdings grew through donations and purchases, supplemented by loans from the church parish, the Stralsund Museum and private individuals.
Since 2001 the museum has been housed in a restored Baroque convent building of the 18th century near St. Mary’s Church. The ground floor is devoted to the prehistory and early history of Rügen, from megalithic tombs through the Bronze Age to the Slavic temple stronghold of Arkona; copies of the Schaprode silver hoard are on view there until the end of 2026.
The upper floor covers the town’s history, which is closely tied to the founding of the convent of nuns in 1193 by Prince Jaromar I. Highlights include a medieval linen cloth with embroidery from around 1330 and a replica of a Romanesque chalice from St. Mary’s Church. The attic offers space for special exhibitions.
