The Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Museum is considered the oldest museum on the island of Rügen. Its predecessor was a local history room from 1929 in the attic of the old city school; in 1937 the new museum building on Burgwall opened and was given his name. The founder was the Garz teacher, cantor and Rügen researcher Ernst Wiedemann; the design came from the Berlin architect Erhard Schmidt. The original concept was a Rügen museum with geology, church and town history, manuscripts and an Arndt department.
From 1965 to 1969 the house was redesigned as a political memorial to its namesake. Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769–1860), publicist, professor and writer, was born in Groß Schoritz near Garz. Since the reorientation in 1992/93 the museum has seen itself as a house for literature and history; in 2015 an extension was added.
The collection focuses on Arndtiana, regional literature of the 18th to 20th centuries, town history, everyday culture, historical personalities and archaeology. Changing exhibitions shed light on Arndt's work and impact and critically examine political history, journalism and literature; further rooms are dedicated to the cultural and town history of Garz and Rügen.
