About the museum
The name is misleading: no money was ever minted in the building on Mittelburgwall. The richly decorated Renaissance building was erected in 1626 as a granary for the stadtholder Adolph van Wael. Later it served, among other things, as a church, a library and a tourist information office, and it is still considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Schleswig-Holstein and northern Germany.
After comprehensive renovation, the municipal museum was established here in 1995. Its modern exhibition tells the story of Friedrichstadt, which was founded in 1621 by Duke Frederick III of Schleswig-Gottorf together with Dutch religious refugees.
The exhibition spans three levels: on the ground floor, the town's founding and building before the destruction of 1850; on the first floor, the various religious communities of the town, including Remonstrants, Lutherans, Mennonites, Catholics and Jews, with a view of the neighboring Mennonite church; upstairs, the museum shows everyday life over the past two centuries, such as schooling, trade, fishing and festivals.
