About the museum
The local history museum in Schwabstedt goes back to a collection assembled by the physician Dr. Hans Meyer, after whom the house and a promotional prize are named. The exhibits belong to the Meyer family; the current person in charge, Mr. Meyer, guides visitors through the exhibition. The museum has existed in its present form since 2004; previously the objects were housed in a much smaller room.
The museum is a pure display-case museum in a single room. It shows objects related to Schwabstedt: a model of the former castle, which was the residence of the Bishop of Schleswig; cannonballs from the former castle grounds; and the skeleton of a person who was buried beneath the castle chapel. Other themes include the composer Nicolaus Bruhns, who came from Schwabstedt, and the "Fingaholi" from Theodor Storm's novella "Renate."
The labels are bilingual, in German and Danish. On the two Pfingstmarkt (Whitsun fair) days, the house opens as usual and displays a collection of fairground models; otherwise, visits are only possible after prior registration.
