Schiffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland
Maritime museum on Husum's inner harbor with the 400-year-old Uelvesbüll wreck, shipbuilding, whaling and a freely accessible outdoor area.
About the museum
The Schiffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland was founded in 1988/89 as a private initiative and is run by the association Schiffahrtsmuseum NF e.V. It is located on the Zingel, right on Husum's inner harbor, in a building dating from 1902.
On four levels, the museum presents the maritime history of the North Frisian coast: wooden and steel shipbuilding, merchant shipping, whaling, coastal fishing, navigation and sea rescue. The explanatory texts are in German, Danish, English and French.
The most important exhibit is the Uelvesbüll wreck, a small Dutch cargo sailing ship that ran aground off the coast around 1600 with a cargo of seed grain. It was salvaged starting in 1994 and conserved by 1997; the salvage and conservation are documented in detail in the museum. Another special feature is the reconstruction of a prehistoric skin boat, inspired by an antler find about 6,000 years old from Husum harbor.
The freely accessible outdoor area on the inner harbor features the buoy tender “Hildegard”, a historic slipway, navigation lights, ship engines, anchors and lifeboats.
