About the museum
The Historisches Museum Aurich is housed in the Alte Kanzlei, a building erected in 1529 from stones of the demolished monastery church at Ihlow. It first served as a town house, then as a council and wine house, and from 1609 as the seat and residence of the count's chancellor. Around 1701 it was converted for the partner of Prince Christian Eberhard.
The museum was ceremonially opened on 5 July 1985; in 1998 it was extended and redesigned with state funding, and in 2001 the MachMitMuseum for children was added. The collection's focal points are Geest culture, residence, town and everyday life. Of around 13,000 collected objects, about 1,500 are permanently on display.
The exhibition leads from Frisian Freedom and the Upstalsboom through churches and monasteries, the Geest and the founding of the town, the residence of the Cirksena and the heyday of the citizens to Aurich in the German Empire, the war years and the new beginning after 1945.
