About the museum
As early as 1731, Prince Georg Albrecht allowed grain to be ground on this site in exchange for a wind fee; at first a Dutch-style earth mill (Erdholländermühle) stood here. In 1855 the miller Hermann H. Knoop bought the business. As the growing town and trees took the wind from the sails, he had the old mill demolished and in 1858 built the present, considerably larger building, which also had room for modern roller mills with motor drive.
The building is almost 30 meters high and rests on a five-story base of more than 200,000 bricks; it is considered the tallest historic windmill in Germany that can be visited. Around 1930 the Knoop family gave up the business, which had become unprofitable. The Sethestift foundation bought the endangered mill in 1932 and leased it to the Freimuth brothers until 1968.
The Heimatverein Aurich (local history association) had the mill restored and opened it in 1977 as a milling museum. Across five floors it shows the original milling technology and the path from grain to flour; from the gallery there is a view over the town.
