About the museum
The windmill in Wiegboldsbur was built in 1812 by Dirck Suncken Kruse as a two-story gallery windmill (Galerieholländer). In 1851 it received a third floor, and it has since stood about 21 meters tall. In 1909 the sails were converted from canvas sails to louvered sails (Klappenflügel) with a wind rose; a miller’s house from 1846 with outbuildings belongs to the ensemble.
Around 1965 grinding with wind power ended, because repairs to the running gear were no longer worthwhile. In 1991 the Mühlenverein (mill association) was founded on the municipality’s initiative; it has cared for the mill on a voluntary basis ever since. Restoration ran from 1993 to 2006; in 2003 a shed for old agricultural machinery was added.
Today the mill houses a local history museum whose holdings come mainly from donations, along with a forge and a carpentry workshop. Popular is the collection of around 60 ice skates. In season the tea room and bread sales are open; there are also children’s baking sessions and weddings under the Königswelle (main shaft).
