About the museum
The Historisches Museum Steinhagen was founded in 1993 by a volunteer association and opened in 1996. It occupies part of the former Schlichte distillery around the church square in the town center, directly below the large Steinhäger bottle on the roof.
The main focus is the history of Steinhäger, the famous juniper schnapps. Historical distilling equipment and many items used for production and sales keep alive the world of the former Steinhäger distilleries. Some of the equipment comes from the Jückemöller distillery and was saved from loss by the long-serving master distiller and museum contributor Horst Feye. Since 2004 the museum has held its own distilling license; the team produces its own spirits, which are sold in the museum shop.
A second focus is local history: documents with transcriptions and numerous seals chart the development of Steinhagen, which is first mentioned in a document in 1258. At irregular intervals, the museum also hosts exhibitions on changing themes. In October 2025 it gained a new landmark: a five-meter-tall Steinhäger bottle on the roof.
