About the museum
The museum shows early works by well-known artists that were created when they were children or young people. According to the museum, it is the only institution in the world devoted exclusively to this theme.
It is housed in a listed rubblestone house on Kirchplatz, the oldest building in town, dating from the 13th century. Over the centuries the house served as a defensive building, meeting place, administrative office with a jail, and craft workshop, among other uses. After extensive renovation the museum opened in 1987; it is run by Ursula Ruth Blaschke.
The permanent exhibition brings together works by artists including Picasso, Klee, Kirchner, Macke, Dix and Höch, and makes clear how early the urge to create appeared in many later masters.
