Upcoming exhibition on Christian motifs in the art of modern Westphalia.
September 13, 2026 – December 6, 2026
Works by the painter Georg Tuxhorn, who died young, and eight other artists of the interwar period are shown; around 80 works make visible how the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship cut short the work of this avant-garde generation.
The small farmhouse where Peter August Böckstiegel was born on April 7, 1889, was built in 1826 and bought by his parents in 1885. From 1922 the artist remodeled it, added a summer studio and living rooms, and gave the house its red coat of paint around 1920. After he returned from the destroyed city of Dresden in 1945, the "New Studio" was added. Since 2009 the artist's house has been protected as a historic monument and can only be visited on guided tours.
For the artist's 125th birthday in 2014, the Kreis Gütersloh district decided to build a museum next to the birthplace. An architectural competition with 314 entrants was won by the Lemgo firm h.s.d. Architekten. Construction took place from 2016 to 2018, financed with support from donors in the region and the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe.
Opened in 2018, the new building sits like an "erratic boulder on the meadow" in front of the artist's house. Its facade is made of Franconian shell limestone and a great deal of oak. Besides a café, art education rooms and storage, it houses a large exhibition hall. The Bund Deutscher Architekten Ostwestfalen-Lippe honored it with its architecture award.
