HMS Otus

British Oberon-class submarine in Sassnitz city harbor on Rügen – a walk-through museum ship on technology and daily life on board.

Opening hoursAdmission from €9.50

About the museum

The Otus is a diesel-electric hunter-killer submarine of the British Oberon class, built at the Scotts shipyard in Greenock, launched in October 1962, and commissioned in 1963. At around 90 meters long, the type is among the largest non-nuclear-powered submarines; the crew numbered 68 sailors.

During 28 years of service in the Royal Navy, the submarine was deployed in the Cold War, the 1982 Falklands conflict, and the Persian Gulf in 1991, among other operations, before being decommissioned in 1991. Underwater, the submarine was driven by two electric motors powered by 448 heavy battery cells; on the surface, two diesel generators recharged the batteries. Their quiet operation made the submarines of this class feared hunters.

A German businessman acquired the decommissioned submarine, had it refurbished in Stralsund, and opened it to the public as a museum ship in Sassnitz city harbor in 2002. Inside, the "Erlebniswelt U-Boot" (Submarine Experience) shows life, work, and technology on board – from the bow torpedo room through the crew quarters and operations room to the engine room.
