The museum opened in 1994 as the “Eisenbahn & Technik Museum Rügen” in Prora, a district of Binz, not far from the listed KdF building and Prora station. In a hall of around 10,000 square meters and on an outdoor site, the focus was initially on steam and electric locomotives, trucks, and fire engines, including Deutsche Reichsbahn engines and vehicles from abroad.
Since 2019, the emphasis has been on automotive history, and the museum has operated as the Oldtimer Museum Rügen. A tour sets four decades of divided German car history from 1949 to 1989 side by side: more than 80 passenger cars from East Germany (GDR) and West Germany show how differently the planned economy and the “economic miracle” shaped vehicle development – from the Trabant to the little Isetta. The most prominent piece is a Volvo 264 TE that served as a state limousine for the East German leadership.
Historic trains, fire engines, and motorcycles are still on display as well. The museum is operated by Deutsche Privatbahn GmbH. On the same site is the NVA-Museum Rügen with East German military equipment, which can be visited together with a combination ticket.
