About the museum
The Bauernhausmuseum Rohrdorf traces its origins to the Gebirgstrachtenerhaltungsverein "Achentaler", a mountain costume preservation association. Its longtime board chairman, Peter Reisner, had been collecting rural tools, furniture and everyday objects since the 1960s. When the collection outgrew its space, the association decided in 1979 to move a historic farmstead to Rohrdorf.
The choice fell on the listed farmhouse of the Barth family from Grasweg near Albaching, a log structure from the early 18th century. It was dismantled in February 1980 and re-erected in Rohrdorf, with the first floor rebuilt in masonry. Members contributed around 20,000 volunteer hours until the building was dedicated in May 1983. The former stable became the association's clubhouse, while the living quarters and the threshing floor were gradually furnished as museum rooms; the museum first opened to visitors in 1988.
Outbuildings were added later, including a Bundwerkstadel barn from Sachsenkam. Since 2019, an extension with a theater stage and hall has complemented the Heimathaus (local heritage house). A twelve-person team from the costume association looks after the museum.
