About the museum
The poet's grandfather bought the house on Nordheimer Straße in 1743 and had it converted into an impressive Baroque house by 1750. Friedrich Hölderlin was born here on 20 March 1770, the son of a monastery estate administrator and a pastor's daughter. In 1970 the property was rediscovered in records of the city archive.
Until 2015 the building was privately owned. It was then fundamentally renovated in compliance with heritage protection requirements and opened as a museum for the poet's 250th birthday in 2020; it is run by the town of Lauffen, with support from the Arbeitsstelle für literarische Museen, Archive und Gedenkstätten in Baden-Württemberg.
In four exhibition rooms the museum uses quotations from letters and extracts from poems to show different sides of the poet, such as the friend, the inventor, the utopian and the lover. In the Poem Experience Room and the Language Laboratory visitors can approach his texts in a playful way, in the large barn the poet's words glow, and in the summer room with its stucco ceiling armchairs and books invite visitors to read. An audio guide tells the story of the house and the life of the poet.
