About the museum
Nordhausen was founded around 1700 as the youngest Württemberg Waldensian village. The memory is kept alive by the association “Waldenserort Nordhausen” e. V., which set up the village museum in 2002 and had it extensively renovated and expanded in 2012. It is housed in the last house in the village still built in the style of the founding period; members restored it on a volunteer basis. Right next door stands the “Waldenserzeichen” monument for the village founders, erected in 2002.
The collection is spread across three rooms of the house, restored as faithfully to its original state as possible. In the former kitchen, display panels trace the story from the beginnings of the Waldensian movement to today's Waldensian church in Italy; the upper floor covers its development and the history of the Nordhausen colony. The exhibition is interactive. Highlights include an original 18th-century French Bible, a Waldensian costume, and a spade from around 1700 that is said to have been used when the village was founded. The concept also includes the historic village center with the Waldensian church, which is part of guided tours.
