About the museum
The Hoffmann-von-Fallersleben-Museum is housed in the surviving west wing of the half-timbered Fallersleben Castle, which was originally built as a dower residence for Duchess Clara of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The wing has been the museum's address since 1991, and the museum now belongs to the municipal cultural institute M2K in Wolfsburg. August Heinrich Hoffmann was born in 1798 within sight of the castle and took the name "von Fallersleben" after his home town.
Nine exhibition rooms are spread over about 300 square metres. They trace Hoffmann's life, his work, his role in the revolution of 1848/49 and the eventful history of his "Song of the Germans", whose third verse forms today's national anthem. Personal mementos, a first print and a handwritten version of the text are on display.
The exhibition emphasises participation: there are listening stations, a karaoke station, a song tree with well-known children's songs and a light xylophone.
