About the museum

The teacher and local historian Richard Brandt from Wennebostel began collecting local heritage objects in 1953 and laid the foundation of the museum. In 1963 he donated the collection to the municipality of Wedemark, which displayed it in Bissendorf. At first it was housed in the Amtshaus (administrative building), later it moved into the Kavalierhaus. After extensive work on the Kavalierhaus in 1999, the museum also began using the neighboring former Amtskrug (district inn).

The Kavalierhaus from 1629, once the guesthouse of the Amtsvogt (district bailiff), shows domestic life around 1900 on the ground floor: the Gute Stube (best parlor), kitchen and bedroom. The Gute Stube also serves as the civil wedding room. On the upper floor there are four collections: paintings and sculptures by the artist couple Greve, the workshop of violin maker Karl Montag, a large clock collection and a fossil collection. The attic of the Amtskrug from 1792 presented the working life of the rural population.

The museum belongs to the municipality and is looked after by a volunteer team of about 20 people. For day-care centers (Kitas) and primary schools there is a hands-on educational program.
