October 25, 2026 – November 8, 2026
Annual exhibition by the artists' group „Die Hauderer“ in the foyer of the Neues Schloss; the 2026 theme is „Tierschicksale“ (fates of animals).
Through December 30, 2027
The exhibition sheds light on the Weimar era in the Hunsrück: hardship and inflation, economic recovery after 1924, and cultural awakening as well as club and village life. The opening was on 25 April 2026.
Special exhibition
The exhibition shows the forest as a natural and cultural landscape from the Middle Ages to the present, with a focus on the Soonwald, from fairy tales and forestry to the return of the wolf. Extended until the end of 2026.
The museum's origins lie in the Hunsrück History Society, founded in 1901, which collected the first finds, documents, tools and coins. In 1921 the Adult Education Association opened the collection in the Schinderhannesturm; in 1930 it moved to the Neues Schloss with five exhibition rooms.
In 1932 the town and district took over sponsorship, and since 1963 the town of Simmern has been the sole sponsor. The exhibition was redesigned in 1966 and 2000; in 1998 the Friedrich Karl Ströher art collection was added. The Neues Schloss was built from 1708 to 1713 and given to the town of Simmern by Napoleon in 1802.
Today the museum shows collections on prehistory and early history, urban and regional history, land and people, Schinderhannes between reality and myth, and art. The museum also includes the Schinderhannesturm and the Edgar-Reitz-Filmhaus.
