About the museum
The Haus der regionalen Geschichte opened in 2007 in the Lower Castle of Kastellaun. The castle is one of the more significant of the roughly 60 medieval castles in the Hunsrück: it served for a time as a residence of the Counts of Sponheim, shaped the development of the town and was destroyed at the end of the 17th century in the War of the Palatine Succession.
On the ground floor the museum shows an exhibition that changes every year. The first floor is devoted to knights and castles: the focus is on Kastellaun Castle, along with other castles of the region.
The attic floor deals with the Cold War since 1945: the Pydna missile base near Hasselbach, conversion, the Hunsrück peace movement and the Nature One festival. Text panels, original documents and multimedia complement the objects. For children there are costumes as castle maidens or knights and a corner for painting, reading and playing. The restaurant Taverne is also located on the castle grounds.
