About the museum

The Hutter Museum in Großberghofen is named after shoemaker Simon Hutter (1867–1952), who founded the collection. He came from a family of shoemakers, often worked as an itinerant craftsman (Störhandwerker) on the farms of the area, and from an early age collected everyday objects, books, and relics of bygone times. After World War II, the family displayed the collection in several rooms of their house and personally led visitors and school classes through the exhibition.

After a new residential building was constructed in 1986/87, there was no longer room for the exhibition, and the collection was to be sold to the Bezirksmuseum Dachau. Instead, on the initiative of local council members, the municipality of Erdweg acquired the Hutter collection. The Hutter Heimatsammlung friends’ association took over the exhibits and in 1996 founded today’s museum in the old parish house of Großberghofen, a branch parish house built in 1859.

The tour leads through five rooms and the attic: a newly designed archaeology section on the settlement of the Dachau region, the local history of Erdweg’s five original municipalities, a farmhouse parlor with 19th-century furniture, religious folk art including parts of a Holy Sepulchre, the Hutter family’s shoemaker workshop, and rural household objects under the impressive roof truss.
