About the museum
The history of the private Kapplerbräu brewery in Altomünster goes back to 1561, when the brewmaster Johann Schmidt first brewed beer here. After the former monastery brewer Simon Schmidt and his brother-in-law Anton Hörmann, Johann Kappler has owned the brewery since 1671. He rebuilt the baroque inn and brewery in 1707, and he is still its namesake today. Since 1922 the business has belonged to the Wiedemann family; in 1937 they built a new brewhouse on Vogelgarten, and today the third and fourth generations look after the brewery, the inn and the hotel.
To preserve the memories and relics of the historic brewery, Hans Wiedemann senior founded the brewery museum in 1985. It is located in a vaulted room from 1707 and displays, among other things, a barrel-gauging device, the old bottle-cleaning and bottling machine, and a hand labeler about 100 years old. The tour covers everything from the raw materials through the brewing process to the bottle. To finish, visitors get the house beer in the museum's old tavern room, where brewers and maltsters once ended their working day.
