About the museum
Walter Gaudnek was born in 1931 in the Sudetenland and studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In 1957 he went to the USA as a master student with a Fulbright scholarship, and from 1970 he taught as a professor at the University of Central Florida. The municipality of Altomünster honored his cultural work with its citizens' medal. He died in Orlando in 2022.
The Gaudnek-Museum was created in his former home and studio on the Sandizellergasse, not far from the monastery church and the Birgittenkloster. Across three floors it shows around 400 paintings, drawings, watercolors, collages, assemblages, objects, sculptures, screen prints and posters, along with the "Theater im Koffer" (Theater in a Suitcase) and an archive of photos and documents.
Exhibitions held in the house include "Mars Scrolls", "Die moderne Kapelle", "Neo China" and "Kunst für das Millennium". Gaudnek's video installation "Cross Glyphs" received a third prize at the Florence Biennale in 2015.
