About the museum
The market town of Altmannstein established the museum in 1997 in honor of its famous son, the sculptor Ignaz Günther (1725–1775). It also covers his ancestors and their artistic legacy. The Günther family originally came from South Tyrol; Ignaz Günther’s great-grandfather Simon emigrated from Brixen to the Altmühl Valley around 1670.
Ignaz Günther trained from 1739 to 1743 in his father’s workshop, then moved to the Munich court sculptor Johann Baptist Straub and afterward traveled through Salzburg, Mannheim, and Olmütz. He received a gold medal at the Vienna Academy of Art in 1753, and in 1754 he settled in Munich. His largely sacred works in Altenhohenau, Rott am Inn, Weyarn, and other places are considered the high points of his career.
The historic building was restored with support from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation; the museum rooms are on the first floor, in the former workshop of the father. The Bavarian National Museum played a major role in the design. The displays feature works by Ignaz Günther himself, by his father Johann Georg, and by his grandfather Leonhard, together with text panels with graphics, some bibliophile treasures, and large color photographs.
