About the museum

The origins of the Marktmuseum go back to 1940. Airfield architect Richard Vollmann came across archaeological finds while building the Manching airfield and developed the plan for a museum in Altmannstein, where he lived. Over the following years he gathered historical material from the town and the neighboring municipalities. Until 1960 the pieces were stored in the former Benefiziatenhaus; then they moved into the town hall, where the second floor was available to them from 1972.

When the municipal archive needed the museum rooms, the municipal council decided in 2000 to house the museum in the listed Hofer House. The three-story building dates back in its core to the 17th and 18th centuries and is marked by a stepped gable from the 19th century. The market municipality bought the former inn at auction in July 2000 and renovated it.

The newly designed museum consists of four rooms. The chronological tour begins with geology and fossils from the Jurassic period, including the predatory dinosaur Juravenator, and continues through prehistory and early history with a focus on the Limes, local history, hop cultivation, and Sumpfkalk (marsh limestone) from the Schambach valley. Further rooms are devoted to the composer Simon Mayr, popular piety, and special exhibitions. In the museum garden by the Schambach there is a Kneipp wading basin.
