About the museum
Since October 2009, the municipality of Grabenstätt has presented the Chiemgau Impact in a small permanent exhibition. The term refers to the impact of a cosmic body which, according to a research group, left an extensive crater strewn field in southeastern Bavaria in prehistoric times. The exhibition is housed in the outbuilding of the town hall, the so-called Schlossökonomie; the concept comes from the Chiemgau Impact Research Team.
On display are finds from geology, petrology, and mineralogy, supplemented by text panels. Comparison pieces from industry and specimens from well-known meteorite craters help place the findings in context. For the 20th anniversary of impact research in 2024, the exhibition was completely redesigned.
Since then, the centerpiece has been a large interactive display: a touchscreen lets visitors navigate individual research topics, each branching into up to four sub-slides that refer to objects in the display cases. One focus is the Tüttensee, whose crater ensemble can be detected particularly well from the air using laser-scan terrain models. The municipality’s Tüttensee circular trail serves as a geological educational trail and leads into the landscape where craters and impact rocks can be discovered. A virtual tour supplements the visit on site.
