About the museum
The museum was prompted by the wish of the local historian Albert Multerer to research and preserve knowledge of Roman culture in the north of the province of Noricum, especially in the area of Grabenstätt and Erlstätt. The local historian Karl Schefczik had earlier searched in vain for a room for his small finds. From Multerer's private collection, the Römermuseum was created in 1980, initially above the pharmacy in Grabenstätt, purely through personal initiative and without state subsidies.
Since 2012 the municipality has provided its own room with display cases. Finds from the surroundings have been documented; beneath the display cases an archive area stores finds and documents, while the most important finds from the area between the Inn and Salzach are displayed above. They bear witness to some five hundred years of Roman culture in the region.
On view are, among other things, mosaics from Roman farmsteads. The mosaic discovered in 1815 in Erlstätt was renewed after its destruction, with original tesserae and an old drawing, by the University of Ravenna in its central section; another mosaic from the 1889/90 excavation was restored by Multerer from his own photographs.
