Künstlerhaus Exter mit Garten
Home and studio of the painter Julius Exter in Übersee-Feldwies on Lake Chiemsee with his paintings and garden, open on summer weekends.
About the museum
The painter Julius Exter (1863–1939), one of the co-founders of the Munich Secession, acquired the old "Stricker" property in Feldwies near Übersee on Lake Chiemsee in 1902. He converted the farmhouse into an artist's residence and set up his studio in the former farm section. From 1917 he lived here permanently, and in 1939 he died in this house.
In Feldwies Exter found his own colorful style, which developed from Symbolism and Neo-Impressionism to Expressionism; many of his pictures show landscapes of the surrounding area. His daughter Judith transferred the house and artistic estate to the Free State of Bavaria in 1972.
Today the Bavarian Palace Administration (Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung) looks after the listed property with its landscape garden. Paintings by Exter are on permanent display in the painter's study and studio. The ensemble of a solid living section with two neo-Gothic porches and the farm section converted into a studio still conveys an impression of the life and work of a painter in the countryside around 1900. The house is open only on weekends in summer. Further works are shown by the Gemäldegalerie Julius Exter in the Augustinian canons' monastery on Herreninsel in Lake Chiemsee.
